The Ultimate Wii Rumour Compilation

Home : Games : Articles

We take an in-depth look at every single rumour about the Wii, beginning in February 2004! Things have certainly changed a lot since then.

Rumours regarding new consoles have always been around. In 1989, the first hints of the new Nintendo console sent my playground at school into a frenzy – it was going to be called the Super Famicom! There would be amazing new graphics! It would…play games! We didn’t know anything about it, really, but we all wanted one. Nintendo learnt very early on that restricting the flow of information creates mystery, which creates demand.

There’s certainly been no console with a more enigmatic lead-up than the Wii, previously known as the Revolution, the N5, GCNext and the GameCube 2. Conjecture surrounding the Wii began in early 2004. Dogged by inaccurate reports of falling profits leading to a retreat from the console business, Nintendo responded in Japan’s Mainichi Shimbun newspaper. There would definitely be a fifth console, but it would break the mould set by the previous efforts. “Like our Nintendo DS portable game machine, our home game machine must offer an experience that can be enjoyed by adults, children, or women. We would like to show this at E3 next spring.”

Behold, the GameCube 2!

Cue the rumour mills. Gameworld Network has endeavoured to collect every rumour ever regarding the Wii. In this article we reveal whether they turned out to be true or false, and the story behind each rumour!
