Fury Interview

Now that you've secured a major publisher, when do you anticipate you will know more about the subscription model chosen for the game?

We haven’t quite signed the LOI yet but we’ve getting very close. As such I can’t tell you anything on this front.

Do you have dreams or nightmares about Fury? Perhaps both? Tell us about them.

Dreams… that Fury is finally released and I get to WTFPWN people ;) Nightmares… that our matchmaking system will somehow suck and won’t work as we intend :/

Why are all the characters in Fury human?

There’s two big reasons why we went with humans only in Fury. The first is gameplay/design based, and then second is art resources.

On the gameplay side, something we were very committed to with Fury is that there are no permanent choices a player could make that would potentially gimp their character. Having non-human races would have totally gone against this policy. Any time you add races into a game, players have a natural expectation that there is some gameplay benefit to choosing an Elf over Dwarf. For example, say Elves have bonuses to evade attacks and dwarfs have bonuses to hit. Players now have the logical expectation that “Elves are best in defensive classes” while “Dwarves are best in offensive classes”.

On the art side, we only have so many character artists to make all the different PCs, NPC, armor suits, animations, etc. If you have really diverse races, each time you add a new suit/style of armor, it’s not a single addition, its one model for each race. This can very, very quickly eat through the time allocation. Personally, I’d rather use our art time to create as many meaningful armor suits and variations as opposed to replicating each suit across half a dozen different races.

Were any animals hurt in the making of Fury? What about relationships with other humans?

There are definitely two animals that have been traumatized by Fury’s development. When I moved from the States to Australia three years ago I had to leave my two dogs with parents since a) I didn’t know how long I was going to be out here and b) bringing animals into Australia is super expensive and very, very time consuming. As it stands I get to see them a couple times each year when I get back to the States to visit family.

On the people side, we’ve been pretty good up until now, but I’m expecting as we move into the next couple phases we’ll need to begin sacrificing a few of the newbs on the team.
