I won’t get into the debate of which console is more powerful or better. This change, more importantly the future Premium upgrade, puts a slight advantage in Microsoft’s hands. I see this as a ploy to get new Xbox owners, though it might tick off current ones. Still, more Xbox owners could mean more exclusives to the Xbox, and better software for all.
Core owners might be more tempted to get an Elite and I might agree that this is a good decision. Why spend a couple hundred bucks on a hard drive when you can sell your Core and spend a little more than twice that much for an Elite? It could make sense, though it’s still debatable.
Where does the Wii fit into all this? Well, I look at Nintendo as taking advantage of the two big guys cancelling each other out. Love the Wii or not, the console doesn’t compare well to the other two and I don’t think it ever intended to. It’s going after a different market in a lot of ways, and the price point for the system also means it is likely to be the second game system in a home. Pick between the Xbox and PS3, and then add a Wii for fun.
Overall, I do applaud what Microsoft is doing. The Elite is just a way to get attention, but the Premium upgrade coming in August gives the system a bit more staying power and addresses some mistakes the company made with the original 360. I don’t foresee too many current 360 owners flocking to get this system. There will only be a couple hundred thousand anyway and they will probably sell for even more on eBay.
The system will sell quickly, and if I didn’t have a Premium already, I would definitely get one. I usually adopt pretty early, but I don’t feel the compulsion to go and exchange my system for a new one. My real question is, why didn’t they make the Elite in silver? A nice metallic look would separate the console from the rest of the crowd. Other than that, if you haven’t bought a system yet, get an Elite, or even better, wait until August and get all the bells and whistles for 80 bucks less.
