Despite a lack of horsepower, the Wii is taking charge this generation!
The Nintendo Wii has come under a lot of fire in the past few days from different analyst and news organizations predicting that the console doesn't have any staying power and some going as far as saying that the Wii will begin to fade by the end of this year. The first reason some believe the Wii will fail is the system is the weakest of all the consoles in terms of graphical horsepower, and that as time goes on this difference will become even more obvious.
The second reason is that eventually the novelty of the Wii remote will wear off, or not be used properly by third parties, which could end up hurting the system. Finally some believe that if indeed the Wii is successful it could destroy the industry since third party software may have a hard time competing with Nintendo's first party titles. As the Wii quickly approaches the install base of the Xbox 360 (only 2 million more to go) the Wii is showing no signs of slowing down.

There is no denying the fact that the Wii is not as powerful as the Xbox 360 or the PS3, but this does not mean it's eventually going to fail. We only have to look back on the last few generations to see that when it comes to being the top dog it doesn't matter how many polygons a system can push. The system that had the largest gap in technology compared to its rivals was probably the Game Boy.

The original Game Boy and even its minor upgrade, the Game Boy Color, outlasted and outsold the Game Gear and all other attempts to take over the handheld market by far superior systems. The same is true for the Nintendo DS, which is currently making a killing of the PSP even without vast multimedia capabilities. Then there is the console that continues to sell better than the Xbox 360, the PS3 and sometimes even the Wii - the PS2. The PS2 has become the biggest selling console in history and has long been the technologically weakest system.
