Game of the Month: March 08 Edition

Home : Games : Articles

We take a look at the best, and worst, games of March 2008.

Game of the Month is a prestigous and honorable title to hold. It doesn't keep ranks with Game of the Year, but you would be hard pressed to find a GotY title having not previously been a GotM winner or contender.

Welcome back to the Game of the Month, where we reboot with the March 08 edition. It's been awhile since we had GotM running, but we're back on track and here to stay. Also this month we introduce our Shame of the Month, which comes right after our choice of this month's best game.

So sit back and fancy a look at what games this month you should have in your library permanently.

This month wasn't a huge gaming month, but we had some big titles come out nonetheless. Such titles like Condemned 2: Bloodshot, Bully on the Xbox 360 and Wii, Rainbow Six Vegas 2, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Army of Two. We took into consideration all of the games that came out this month and looked closely at what deserves our coveted title of Game of the Month, as well as any possible games for Game of the Year.

Over the course of the month, we'd been discussing these games, leaving out only Dark Sector and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, which both came out on the 25th respectively, too close to actually get a good discussion on. However, after some gameplay, we feel that our current decision remains unchanged for: Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Wii!

Why? It's one of the biggest, best games on the Wii right now, hands down. It does just what the console was made for: be a great party title with intense combat for anyone. The staff is simply flabergasted with it, for the most part. Here's some things we had to say about it:

"Even if the online mode kind of sucks, it's still one of the best in-house multiplayer experiences you'll find on a console... like Mario Party, Smash Brothers is a game that's most fun when it's played with four people in the same room. That way you can physically smack the Pikachu thunder spammer, laugh at your buddy who fails at getting back on to the stage, etc... I can't even imagine ever being completely done with the game." - Mitchell Saltzman

"Like, we realize it's [Wii online gaming] terrible, and Nintendo should really stop shafting gamers with the online multiplayer, but the game is great anyway." - Nick Place

I really like Condemned 2, but up against Brawl? Even though the online is bad as it gets (its like trying to play blindfolded) it is still a great game." - Sean Tonks

It's mainly agreed that SSBB is a great game for Nintendo's console, though it's poor online multiplayer support, either due to Nintendo's lacking online presence or the developer's decision to make it the way it is, was pretty upsetting for those of us who've grown to like Microsoft's Xbox Live and Sony's PlayStation Network. Whether it's playing the game in four different control configurations (Wiimote with/without nunchuk, classic controller or GameCube controller), playing as one of 35 different characters over 41 maps or just having three friends over to school, SSBB takes the cake.

As a close second comes, both surprisingly and unsurprisingly, God of War: Chains of Olympus. We expected much from it, but due to it's smaller form factor (being a PSP title), it didn't seem like it would match the very epic gameplay we've come to expect from God of War titles. We were very wrong, and it was one of, if not the best experience on the PSP to date.

It doesn't get our Game of the Month honor, but there's no doubt that Chains of Olympus is a contender for Game of the Year on the PSP.
