32 Hours in Liberty City

Home : Games : Articles

Since the vehicle I was driving felt too hefty for a awesome, action movie stunt turn to a game of chicken, I decided to ram through the blockading car causing me to swerve into a group of people just trying to have their mid-afternoon smoke. I guess if I didn’t kill them, virtual lung cancer would have. Still, two of the group’s participants were under my grinding tires, one was on my hood, and the remaining member was somewhere splattered down the alley.

At this point the cops had caught up to me and I could either flee on foot with minimal health, or just give up and pay my debt to society. Ah hell, I am already an ice-cold killer, might as well see it to the end right? So I took off running only to ironically be hit by a Patriot. That karma sure is something eh?

So here I am; the cold-blooded killer whose reign of terror was ended by the terrified driver of a hummer. In reality I was probably so guilty about killing and robbing those and too terrified to go to jail because of what I once saw on OZ, that I ran in front of that hummer on purpose. Then again, if what happened was the work of some sort of virtual karma, how does one progress in this world by not doing the bad deeds?

Then it hit me, the paragon in this game is to do nothing but taxi missions. Having to work your way to the American Dream $12 dollar fares at a time - no fame, no material fortune, just a crappy job chauffeuring a bunch of ungrateful people around a city fending for itself is the simple and humble version of the heavily sought after American Dream in Liberty City.
Having realized the paragon to my renegade lifestyle, which was I going to choose? As a cab driver, I could do some online dating, find a nice girl, settle down and work all day to provide for my material-needy woman or I could answer this phone call about a job guaranteed to provide a purse twenty times any cab fare.

31 hours later I was faced with a similar decision… my pride and morals or the money? 32 hours and 20 minutes later… I was left walking the city a rich man; I will leave it to you to figure out if I was rich in morals or cash.

Grand Theft Auto IV enabled me to view a choice of lifestyle under certain rules that do not exactly mimic the physical plane. Seeing my choices and the consequences brought on by them left me at one conclusion… thank god I choose a life of writing 1,000 words about a virtual personality test than the life of a contract killer - too much guilt for my conscience.
