The Metal Gear Solid Retrospective: Part 1 - Metal Gear Solid

Some personal thoughts about Metal Gear Solid

Metal Gear Solid to me was the first game that truly lit the fires for my love of video games. It all started back when I first received my PlayStation on my 14th birthday. I didn't have any games to play on the system at the time, instead receiving enough money to take care of that the next day. I had to settle with playing the demo disc that came in the box (how long has it been since game systems came with demo disks?).

A majority of that disc was crap but there was one game on there that was just unbelievably good, the tactical-espionage-action game, Metal Gear Solid. I played through the demo so many times finding new ways to get to the cutoff point, which incidentally was when you rescue the DARPA chief, Donald Anderson, who has a massive heart attack which leads an eavesdropping Meryl to bang on the wall shouting, "hey what happened"!?

What happened indeed I wondered?

Unfortunately, I wouldn't find out for another few months because the Holyoke Best Buy decided they were going to run out of copies of the game before I could drag my over-sleeping self out of bed. Instead I took home Final Fantasy VII, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and some other RPG I can't remember right now. In retrospect I walked away with one good game, but that game would open up a whole different series obsession for another day.

Then I was at a Target when I convinced my mom to buy me both Metal Gear Solid and Mega Man X4. Doing that was pure luck, it was fate that I was to get MGS and Mega Man came along for the ride. It is the weekend, the perfect gaming weekend too, pizza, PlayStation and two days off school. I popped in MGS and was instantly hooked.

I played all weekend for every hour I was awake. Then the worst thing happened... the weekend was up and I hadn't finished the game yet. Thankfully I had some sick days to cash in; every kid gets two and the rest they have to earn. I used both. I finished MGS on the last sick day and it couldn't have been a better ending... at least until I learned there was two endings to MGS.

For that moment though I was satisfied, I just played the best game in my life, well one of the best games at least. I instantly clamored to our crappy 56k equipped computer and found out everything I could about MGS. That was when I first learned of Hideo Kojima, and in a sense about Konami, and that games could actually create such awesome emotion.
