In just a little over a week, the final chapter in the Solid Snake saga will hit store shelves all over the world. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots will close a tale 21 years in the making. In celebration of the series that has changed the way a lot of gamers, myself included, have come to perceive what a game can be, we are taking a look back at the three Metal Gear Solid games starting with part one,Metal Gear Solid.
Metal Gear Solid was released on October 21st, 1998 in North America and has since become a phenomenal cult classic among gamers throughout the world. In the time of when games came inside jewel CD cases,Metal Gear Solid came in a double-CD case with the most simply logo imaginable which you could argue spoke to how this game didn’t need busy artwork, it caught your eye with pure simplicity.
The game portrays the story of a retired soldier with a not-so-sunny disposition, who has been thrown back into the heat of battle against his will. This soldier is the legendary Solid Snake and he has been given 24 hours to complete three objectives, save both the DARPA Chief, Donald Anderson and ArmsTech President, Kenneth Baker, and stop terrorists from detonating a nuclear warhead.
All in a day’s work right? However, it is quickly learned that nothing in Solid Snake’s world is the simple as he finds out that the terrorists are in possession of a bi-pedal nuclear walking battle tank – Metal Gear Rex.
Not to mention the terrorists are actually members of the elite unit, FOXHOUND and all have some sort of knack for killing. Oh, and he discovers that most of the people that were “helping” him were lying to him, not to mention he has been injected with a virus set to kill certain people and he is one of them. Towards the end of the game, you began to see why this guy is so gloomy and bitter. While the story was as every bit as cinematic as it sounds, it was nothing without the finely crafted characters that made it come to life.
