DEMO REVIEW
Sonic Adventure premiered with Sega’s Dreamcast back in 1999 and was Sonic’s first 3D action/adventure game. Since then it’s been ported to GameCube and now to PC.

The demo brings one level for each of the six characters and each character’s objectives and gameplay types are different from each other. Of course with Sonic, the goal is blaze through the level at break-neck speeds.

With Tails, you’ll be also be running a full speed in a race against Sonic to the end of the level. Knuckles’ level features treasure hunt style gameplay, searching for shards of the Master Chaos Emerald.

Amy’s level is all about avoiding one of Robotnik’s robots who’s out to find her and involves a lot of jumping and button pushing. Lastly, E-102’s level is basically a lock-on shooter and Big the Cat’s is… a fishing level.

As I mentioned before, this game was originally developed on a console so it was built for use with an analog joystick. You can use your keyboard, however I found it very, VERY difficult to get through anyone but Sonic and Tails’ level using the arrow keys.

Another thing I should mention is that this game is entirely in Japanese (a US version hasn’t been announced yet), so setting up your joystick could be pretty hard. Still, even despite the control problems, it was still great to zoom through Sonic’s level at top speed.

Most of the fun is in the speedy characters, one can only suffer through a Big the Cat fishing session for so long. The character models look pretty good (especially Sonic) however a lot of the textures are pretty poor. The sound is pretty well done with some great scores for the levels and title screen and your standard Sonic sound effects.

The demo ate up a good hour of my time and is a welcome entry into the void of platformers on the PC. In the end, this is a fairly good download for anyone with a PC controller with a joystick and a great download if you’re a fan of Sonic.
