As blue-laser pick-up heads increase in supply (and decrease in price), the cost to make the PS3 could drop significantly.
Digitimes are adding fuel to the PS3 price cut rumor with their latest article, which talks about impending production cost decreases for the PS3. According to the article, Sony have announced an expansion of its monthly production of blue-biolet laser diodes, a critical component (and previous stumbling block) in the production of the PS3 console. Reduction of costs could reach US$100 per console, meaning that a price drop at the consumer end is one step closer.
Bear in mind, however, that in order for Sony to make a single cent of profit from each PS3 console sale, they would need to somehow reduce current production costs by US$241.35. 100 bucks ain't gonna cut it, my friend.
