Sony confirm that a 80GB PS3 model will be released in Korean territories from June 16th.
After months of speculation, Sony has confirmed that the company plan on releasing a 80GB variation of their Playstation 3 console – but it will only be available in Korean territories.
News broke this morning following a report on Sony’s official Korean website, which revealed that the firm will release a 80GB mode there on June 16th, price at KWR 518,000 (EUR 412).
A spokesperson for SCEE later confirmed the details to be true, adding that the 80GB is the only version of the console to go on sale there, as the company are not releasing a 20GB or even 60GB model in the region.
While this indeed confirms the long-rumored existence of a 80GB PS3, Sony stated that there are currently no plans to release this model elsewhere – specifically Europe -, adding, "At this moment in time, there are no plans to introduce the 80GB version of PlayStation 3 in Europe.”
Despite what we may have been lead to believe, the model will only differ from its European counterpart in hard drive specifications.
“The chassis of the 80GB Korean PlayStation 3 is identical to the chassis of the European version. The only exception is the larger hard drive”, added the spokesperson.
