Concrete details on Capcom’s upcoming PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 title, Resident Evil 5 have been unveiled in the latest issue of Famitsu Weekly, following an interview with the games producer, Jun Takeuchi.

Revealed during a ‘Horror Special’ this week, Takeuchi wasted no time in confirming that the games mysterious protagonist is that of former Raccoon City S.T.A.R.S member, Chris Redfield. Now in his mid-30s, as the game takes place ten years after the events in the original, Redfield has been dispatched to Africa to investigate a series of odd occurrences as part of a group known only as ‘BSAA’.

Takeuchi went on to state that the games enemies would be more “human-like” that previous instalments, confirming that they are neither zombies nor Los Ganados.  In addition, he revealed that a returning female character would also crop up in the game, and will play a major role in both gameplay and storyline. What’s more, we’ll be able to see her in the upcoming E3 trailer released through PlayStation Network and Xbox Live on July 27th.

Moving on, he confirmed that the game would play similar to that of its predecessor Resident Evil 4, with Redfield appearing on the left hand side of the screen in an over-the-shoulder perspective. However, he stated that a new feature would also be introduced, marking what he called an obvious evolution to the series. Finally, Takeuchi reiterated the importance of light in the game, in which your characters eyes would have to adjust to entering a darkened or bright location for the first time, causing haziness or sun glare, limiting your vision for a short period.

Sadly, a release date of 2009 is probable, though the team aren’t ruling out a possible release in 2008. Stay tuned for more news as it breaks.
