Star Wars Galaxies Fights Poverty

The popular MMO helps to raise funds and awareness for ‘Habitat for Humanity’ to Fight Poverty Housing.

Sony Online Entertainment and LLC’s Austin, TX studio recently teamed up with the Austin Habitat for Humanity (AHFH) in order to help Austin resident finds homes.

The former companies used the popular massively-multiplayer online role-playing game, Star Wars Galaxies, in which player-created houses that have been abandoned are destroyed after a time, to do so.

Players were invited to destroy the buildings for themselves (or let the Galactic Empire do it), but SOE Austin decided to takes things further.

“Using the money we raised blowing-up virtual houses and buildings to help build real homes was a no-brainer for us,” SOE Austin VP of Development John Blakely.

“Austin Habitat for Humanity has done incredible work in the community, helping people find good homes, and our whole studio wanted to contribute to their efforts.”

Blakely will be presenting Executive Director Michael Willard with a donation at the Austin Game Developers Conference later today.
