Atari and Critics Go to War Over Alone in the Dark

With the Metal Gear Solid 4 review embargo still in our memories, here comes more controversy about reviews of a new game.

Atari is filing suit against two Dutch gaming sites that published scathing reviews of the company's much publicized revival of Alone in the Dark. The troubled game developer alleges that the sites must have reviewed pirated copies.

4Players gave AITD 68 out of 100, while Gamer.nl gave it a 5 out of 10. Gamer.nl said Atari contacted them within an hour of the bad review saying they had violated an embargo. The site also said Atari reps told them only high-scoring reviews could break said embargo.

Gamers will no doubt instantly flashback to the Metal Gear Solid 4 embargo preventing reviewers from discussing the game's lengthy cutscenes, among other things. Under intense pressure once word leaked out, Konami backed off alllowing G4TV to air their review. It should be noted that reviews for MGS4 are almost universally good.
