Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales

Gameplay is much like the other areas of the game - great while on the sea and average on land. Land life is quite boring and only serves as a realm to more adventures on the high seas. The only real reason to travel on land is to gather additional missions, rumors, supplies, and pirates at the local tavern to take to the water again and continue the adventure. While on the seas players will be able to truly experience what it means to be a pirate.

Hunting down English ships, looting their valuables and selling them to the various merchants to gain more gold to heavily arm your ship are some of the tasks you will enjoy. Sure there are other features to the game like building colonies but these seem to be tacked on additions than actual features that were planned for the game.

Sound is just about the only thing that is universally good in the game. Both on land and on the sea sound is great and helps to immerse the player in the atmosphere the developer tried so hard to capture. Everything from cannon fire to the sound of howling wind is fantastic.

Unfortunately not everything in Age of Pirates is stellar. What could be an amazing game is damaged by rushed publishing and tacked-on features. Thankfully the great sound, beautiful sea graphics, and battles more than make up for the on foot portions of the game. As a whole the game is not perfect but anyone that wishes they could set sail and become Captain Jack Sparrow can find many enjoyable hours with this game.

Highs
Beautiful graphics; open-ended game play; simple fighting mechanics; epic sea battles; live out life as a pirate!

Lows
Limited locations; broken features; frequent crashes; sluggish controls; island life is a snore.

Final Verdict
Clunky island controls and gameplay darken what is otherwise an extremely enjoyable action RPG that truly shines during its high seas adventures.
