Like aged Christmas baubles that your grandparents still have from 1953, old school video gamers like me have a fondness for those titles that stole quarters and hours from our childhood. One company stood head and shoulders above all others during my arcade trotting years and that company is of course, Capcom.
Guile “flips” for the Street Fighter compilation.
Having already released the Capcom Classics Collection Remixed, they have now added Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded. The latter is a compilation of arcade scrolling titles that for the most part are some of the most memorable in gaming history, while the remainder may only be recognizable by our Asian friends across the Pacific. In the Reloaded offering, gamers get 19 titles, most of which are great for reliving those good old days:
1942, 1943, 1943 KAI, Commando, Eco Fighters, Exed Exes, Ghosts ‘N Goblins, Ghouls ‘N Ghosts, Super Ghouls ‘N Ghosts, Gun.Smoke, The King of Dragons, Knights of The Round, Mercs, Pirate Ship Higemaru, Son Son, Street Fighter II, Street Fighter II: CE, Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting and Vulgus.
Gives a whole new meaning to “bombs bursting in air.”
For our younger gamers who may not recognize these titles, let me just say that there are no Metal Gear Solid plots, or CG animated cut scenes. The one thing that most all of these titles have in common is survival. Whether it’s surviving wave after wave of enemy aircraft, battling one on one in Street Fighter or slicing up hulking monsters you can expect simple, unadulterated arcade goodness.
For those of you who are familiar with these titles, I think I safely speak for the majority when I point out that the games in this collection are well worth the money. My personal favorites are Ghouls ‘N Ghosts, Super Ghouls ‘N Ghosts, Street Fighter II: CE, The King of Dragons, 1943, and Knights of The Round.
It wouldn’t be a Capcom collection without The King of Dragons.
I played all of these games back when they were released in the arcades and on home consoles. Playing this compilation reminded me of late night sessions with Super Ghouls ‘N Ghosts and staring bleary-eyed at the arcade screen as I tried desperately to finish off M. Bison. Those were the days…
While all of the games in Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded may not interest you, just the handful mentioned above are certainly of the highest caliber when discussing arcade classics. Just the inclusion of Street Fighter II: CE would have convinced me to make the purchase.
