Attack on Pearl Harbor

I used my wired Xbox 360 controller I had laying around from my Netkar days and plugged that in. The game recognized the controller, but the problem was the fact that you cannot re-map the keys for your controller. There are no options to change your button layout and you’re stuck with a very ridiculous control scheme. To add insult to injury, you cannot even access the options menu while in the game. You have to completely exit the game back to your desktop, restart the game and then you can access those options before you launch the program. At no time during the game… I stress at NO TIME can you access your options menu while playing.

These planes can take an absurd amount of punishment.

After opening and closing the application a dozen times, I finally got the settings where I could at least play the game. This doesn’t mean I was satisfied with them, it just means that I had given up trying to correct them. Once I began playing I noticed how terribly this title attempts to throw a half-assed storyline into it. Playing off the idea in Microsoft’s Combat Flight Simulator II they attempt to give the ‘comic book’ look to the opening sequence by throwing you some very terrible dialogue and voice acting, along with the most irritatingly boring plots. Imagine the most cliché plot you can imagine, then remove nearly 90% of the dialogue and then wrap that in a comic book, then sprinkle some of the worst voice acting you’ve ever heard on top and you have an opening sequence in Attack on Pearl Harbor.

This is one of the three camera views you can choose from. It makes for a very dramatic experience.

Besides the nuisance of bad voice acting and poor interface options, the game is quite nice. Everything about the game runs smoothly besides the bug when using the mouse to control. In fact, this could be one of the smoothest running games I’ve played in a long time. Every time you click on something it cycles to the next stage quickly and smoothly. The game’s frame rates are awesome even with the settings cranked all the way up. Actually, once you get past the irritating things and get into the bulk of the game it’s heavily addicting.
