Multiplayer did receive the most significant shot in the arm with several new modes available. Easily the most fun is the Akrid Hunter game in which a random players (up to four in a full sixteen player match) play as one of three types of hulking Akrid as the remaining players try to eradicate them. Akrid Egg Battle is a sort of capture the flag variant and Counter Grab is an interesting take on King of the Hill. Also interesting is VS Annihilator which gives each team one VS and lets everyone go at trying to take down the opposing mech.

With Colonies Edition Microsoft has also added a new game to its collection of titles that can be played cross-platform with the 360 and PC but, strangely, Colonies on either platform is incompatible with the original game. You can't play online against owners of the original disc saved LP games, scores, and what not cannot be carried over into Colonies. It's a strange decision for Capcom to make as it's doubtful that every fan of the original will want to pop the three sawbucks for the new version.
Overall the new additions made available with Colonies Edition make it a great game to grab if you've not played Lost Planet in the past or if you're a serious LP multiplayer fan. Those who enjoyed the original but aren't too into the multiplayer won't exactly be wowed by this upgrade.
