Lego Indiana Jones: the Original Adventures

Lego Indiana Jones has nothing to do with the recent film, but mimics everything that was great about the original film trilogy with humor, excellent pacing, and varied gameplay.

Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures is a brick-by-brick re-imagining of the Indiana Jones trilogy of films. Much like the Lego Star Wars games before it, it’s a quality action-platformer, with puzzles, combat, and a venerable ton of collectibles and unlockables to pursue.

The Lego version of Indiana is daring - and adorable.

The game is organized by chapters and follows the events of the three films. Players are able to tackle the levels of any of the films – Raiders of the lost Ark, Temple of Doom, or The Last Crusade, and once a level is completed, it is unlocked for free play. Players can root about in the over world of Barnett College (where Indy moonlights as a professor of archeology) and bounce about the three films in any order, or play all the way through Indy’s adventures.

Expect the same sort of platforming shenanigans from Lego Star Wars.

Levels play out in sequences, with players alternating control among Lego people (generally, Indiana and another character or two). Everything is made of Lego blocks, meaning that most objects are destructible – and more than a few are constructible, requiring you to build a vehicle or object to get by obstacles. There is a nice rhythm and flow to the gameplay, which mixes up platforming bits (your usual running, jumping, and whip-swinging), action-combat (Indy employs his fists and whip, while others all have their own advantages), and puzzle solving. Some vehicle levels and boss battles mix up the action even more, keeping the game beautifully paced and always moving.
