Champions of the Capcom universe unite in what was supposed to be an epic battle, but ends up being a massive disappointment.
Capcom really seems to be on a roll of releasing fighting collections lately, but this one turns out to be a huge pile of waste. Using characters from almost every capcom fighting game there is, from Street Fighter to the little known Red Earth, would generally be a win-win situation but not in this case. The characters from across time are just too unbalanced to make a fun game.
There really, honestly, is not much to say about the graphics in the game. If you have at any point in time played one of Capcom's 2d fighting games, then you can picture what this looks like. I can understand embracing something that isn't broken, but these character sprites have been in use for at least a decade. Time for a bit of an update, I would say.
The amount of characters selectable is a fairly decent amount, over 20. The amount that would be fairly selected in battle and have an even remote chance of winning is significantly smaller. Single digits people. I can't imagine what Capcom was thinking while making this game, which I imagine didn't take long since they didn't change anything from any of the characters.
Sounds in the game were nice for their time, which could amount to a decade ago for some of these people, but really don't impress anymore. Assuming they impressed in the first place.
Gameplay is what used to be Capcom's fighting games strong point, but lately they seem to be throwing it down the toilet in favor of producing more of them to increase profits. The characters in this game are so horrendously unbalanced that 80% of them are not characters you would ever select while playing this game unless you were playing against your four year old brother.
This game truly deserves the reward for the Worst Fighting Game of 2004. I have not played all of the ones that came out this year, but this one stands out to me for a truly bad attempt at making a game. Capcom has been in this business for untold years and I can't imagine why they would toss something like this out. Disappointing, like I said before. Truly disappointing.
Unless you absolutely must have every Capcom fighting game they release, and even then I don't recommend it, then don't pick this one up. Hopefully Capcom will take the hint and release a decent game next time.
