On the charge of being an excellent adventure game on the DS, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is declared guilty as charged.
Court is in Session
We are here today to review the defendant, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, and give it a numerical percentage rating. The defendant has been charged with being a text based adventure game created by Capcom and also goes under the alias of Gyakuten Saiban in Japan. It must also be known that the defendant is actually an American translation of the first Gyakuten Saiban game that was created on the Gameboy Advance with the added bonus of an extra case that utilizes the DS’s touch screen. We will start by hearing the defense’s opening statement.
The character designs and background art are both excellent.
A Breath of Fresh Air
Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is a breath of fresh air both in its own genre, and in the grand scale of video games as a whole. It is able to combine great characterization, engaging logic puzzles, gut busting humor, and some of the most intense plot twists that you will ever experience playing video games. The game stars a young clueless lawyer named Phoenix Wright. Over the course of the story, you will witness Phoenix’s transformation from a complete newbie lawyer who does not even know what a cross examination is, to a highly respectable “Comeback Kid” who is always able to prove his client’s innocence even when all the evidence is seemingly against him.
Story and characters are the make or break qualities of text based adventure games and luckily, Phoenix Wright has both in spades. Phoenix’s story unfolds over the course of five unique cases that are all usually connected in some way. Murder weapons in one case will be brought up again in another, cases that you previously won will become the subject of important discussions, and cases that were previously mentioned to be unsolvable will be thrust on to the player to solve.
Characters too will pop up in different cases and will constantly be changing and developing thanks to Phoenix’s determination to stand up for the innocent. Of special mention is Phoenix’s rival, Miles Edgeworth. If Phoenix’s goal is to do everything in his power to prove his client innocent, Edgeworth’s goal is to do everything possible to get a guilty verdict. Edgeworth has been known to falsify evidence, destroy evidence, and use bribery to get what he wants. Over the course of the game though, you find out that Edgeworth is actually one of the more complex characters in the game and you may even find yourself liking him by the end.
